If you could, what would you change about your smile?
Would you make your teeth whiter or maybe a bit straighter? Do you have chips or other damage to the enamel that you’d like to see erased? Are your teeth short or eroded or maybe widely spaced?
The Chatham dental office of Dr. Corina Atanase has a solution for all of these aesthetic dental issues – veneers.
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are placed over the top of your natural teeth to conceal cosmetic flaws and improve the appearance of your teeth. Porcelain veneers are often the secret behind the flawless smiles of movie stars and other celebrities. Thanks to improvements in dental techniques and technology, porcelain veneers are now more affordable than ever, which means that you can have a movie-star-quality smile, too.
The Advantages of Veneers
Veneers have a number of advantages and benefits over other cosmetic procedures. Less invasive than crowns and more permanent than teeth whitening treatments, veneers offer a natural-looking tooth surface so that nobody will ever suspect that your smile isn’t simply the product of good oral health.
Because porcelain veneers are so thin and translucent, the natural tooth beneath is allowed to shine through for a more realistic appearance. Additionally, porcelain reflects the light in the same way that natural teeth do. Although bonding can fix some of the same problems as veneers, the bonding material – even when it’s been perfectly matched to the color of your teeth – is not reflective in the same way.
Despite the thinness of veneers, they are still strong and durable. Your veneers can last up to a decade before they will need to be replaced. With continued good hygiene habits, your veneers will also be resistant to staining.
Can Anybody Get Veneers?
While veneers are right for many of our patients, unfortunately, they are not right for everybody. If you have periodontal disease or areas of decay or if you grind your teeth, veneers may not be a good choice for you. However, we are happy to work with you to treat these conditions, and once they are under control, you may turn out to be a great candidate for veneers!
Is It Difficult to Care for Veneers?
Caring for veneers is as simple as taking care of your own teeth. Once the veneers are placed, they will be indistinguishable from your own natural enamel. All you will have to do is brush and floss your teeth according to the routine that Dr. Atanase has set out for you.
To extend the life of your veneers, be careful not to chew things that aren’t food, including pens, ice, and your fingernails. Don’t smoke, and be sure to brush your teeth after eating and drinking foods and beverages known to stain.
