Preventive Dentistry
Our preventive care services are designed to help stop problems before they start. That’s why, before you undergo any treatment, we’ll clean your teeth to prevent additional problems. Since cleanings can eradicate stains from your tooth enamel and remove bacterial build-up from your teeth and gums, they are often the first step of your care. Even if you have healthy teeth, we advise our patients to see us for a cleaning every three, four or six months. At most cleaning appointments you can expect to have intra and extra oral cancer screenings, periodontal screenings, review of check up x-rays and a doctor to perform a check up exam. During these visits, we can also talk to you about our other preventive care services including:

Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance Therapy
Sleep apnea is a common disorder in which one pauses breathing or takes shallow breaths while sleeping.
Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They can occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breaths start again, with a loud snort or choking sound.
Sleep apnea usually is a chronic condition that disrupts one's sleep. It is not possible to reach deep sleep enough times during the night in this case - resulting in poor sleep quality and tiredness during the day. Sleep apnea is one of the most common causes of excessive daytime sleepiness.
Sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed. Most people who have sleep apnea don't know they have it because it only occurs during sleep. A family member and/or bed partner may be the first to notice the signs of sleep apnea. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This most often means that the airway has collapsed or is blocked during sleep. The blockage may cause shallow breathing or breathing pauses. When one tries to breathe, any air that squeezes past the blockage can cause lout snoring. Obstructive sleep apnea is more common in people who are overweight, but it can affect anyone. Small children may have enlarged tonsils which can lead to obstructive sleep apnea.
Untreated, sleep apnea can:
- increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity and diabetes
- increase the risk of heart failure
- make arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats, more likely
- increase the chance of having work-related or driving accidents.
Sleep apnea is a chronic condition that requires long-term management. Management for sleep apnea includes: lifestyle changes, CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machine or oral appliances. Some patients do well with CPAP machines but there are some inconveniences, such as: difficulty to get used to the constant pressure of air that gets pushed in the airway; one is attached to the unit and it makes movement in bed or out of bed inconvenient; bulky machinery to travel with. Oral appliances can help by advancing the lower jaw and simultaneously advancing the tongue which in turn opens the airway while asleep.

Dr. Atanase has the training to make very comfortable oral appliances to help in the management of sleep apnea.

Additional information about Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance TherapyNon-Surgical Periodontal Therapy
Non-surgical therapy removes plaque and calculus by controlling the growth of harmful bacteria and by treating conditions that encourage gum disease. This type of treatment may be all that's needed, especially when periodontal disease is caught early. You may also need to have certain procedures, such as replacing worn fillings or crowns with overhanging margins that can accumulate plaque, taken care of before periodontal therapy can begin. Scaling and Root Planing:Scaling is a type of cleaning that removes plaque and calculus from the teeth at and slightly below the gumline. Root planing smoothes root surfaces, so the supportive tissues can better reattach to the tooth surface. Often, this will be done with local anesthesia so you can relax and feel nothing as we rehabilitate your gums. Antibiotics:Periodontal disease is a bacterial disease and the key to controlling or eliminating it is the effective reduction or elimination of the harmful bacteria. An adjunctive option to scaling and root planing may be provided in either pill form or applied directly to the infected area (gum pocket) in the form of antibiotic powder. An antibacterial mouth rinse also may be prescribed to help control the harmful effects of and reduce bacterial plaque. Occlusal Adjustment:An improper bite or a traumatic occlusion may increase bone destruction attached to such offending teeth. We may either choose to adjust your bite so that your teeth meet properly and function better or construct a custom bite guard or splint- a removable device that fits over upper or lower teeth - to protect teeth surfaces and relax tense jaw muscles. | ||
Root Canals
What Is A Root Canal?
When the nerve in a tooth dies, the infected tissue must be removed by either extracting the tooth, or performing a root canal.
Removing the infection from the tooth and filling the canal where the nerve was removed is called a root canal (also known as endodontic treatment).
Why Would A Tooth Need A Root Canal?
The nerve in a tooth can become infected for many reasons.
For example, an area of deep decay could involve the nerve, or the accidental fracture of part of the tooth could expose the nerve.
Sometimes, just a blow to the tooth can cause the nerve to die and become infected.
In any case, when the nerve becomes infected, the nerve tissue must be removed by either extracting the tooth, or performing a root canal (endodontic treatment).
Ideally, the root canal should be done before the infection has a chance to get into the bone, before the area develops extreme swelling and pain.
Periodic dental examinations, and having your tooth checked when it first begins to hurt will usually help avoid severe complications.
Veneers
Whitening
You may have seen a model’s smile gleam on the cover of magazine. Possibly you watched an actress step out on the red carpet and flash a brilliantly white smile. Or you have a family member or friend who has the most radiant looking teeth you’ve ever seen. If you’ve ever asked yourself, “How did they get those smiles?” their secret may be tooth whitening.
Whitening has become very popular. Many people use it to remove stains caused by coffee, red wine, tobacco use, medication, or other sources. No matter what the stain is, whitening can brighten the appearance of your teeth.
While there are a number of products on the market, we recommend the safest and most effective whitening methods.
